Previously On
Pete: (desperate) No!
Pete moves her hand away just before she fires.
Pete: Hey...Michonne drops the gun and Pete offers his hand.
Zachary: Randall should be the one laying there... Not your brother.
Sam: I... I... I've never... killed anyone.
Michonne stabs Jonas in the leg with the screwdriver.
Michonne hits Jonas with the pipe.
Sam throws Jonas to the ground.
Michonne: I'm not leaving you behind.
Pete: You start butchering their people and our chances of making it out of here, any of us, go down to zero.
Michonne: Pete, if you're sure about this...
Pete: Don't worry, I've got this.Sam: They-- they had some supplies just sitting out and... Norma caught me. I didn't think she was going to, but... she-- she let me go.
Michonne briefly hallucinates seeing her daughters.
Sam: Michonne? What is it?
John is shot in the face and collapses. Randall and his group point their guns at Michonne. Michonne runs away.
Michonne drops the wrench and starts to walk away.
Randall: Guess that means the dance is over. Your funeral.
Michonne leaves the garage.Michonne hits Randall in the face with the wrench, killing him.
Flashback
Michonne imagines seeing her daughters lying dead in the middle of nothingness, blood pouring from their heads. She opens her eyes. She is on a sailboat in the middle of the ocean.
2 Weeks Earlier
Michonne looks over at the rest of the crew, who is gathered at the other end of the boat. Oak walks up to her.
Oak: (to Michonne, clearly joking) Hope you're not thinkin' about jumping. 'Cause if you do, I'm gonna have to come in after you. Not looking forward to that. Water's gonna be an ice bath.
Michonne: (skeptical) Really? You'd come after me?
Michonne: I just needed some space.
Michonne: No one wants to see that, Oak.
Michonne says nothing.
Oak takes a drink from the mug he's holding and shivers.
Oak: Brr! Freezing my ass off. Here. (offers cup to Michonne) Coffee'll warm you up. Go on. You'll be glad you did.
Michonne takes the cup and has a sip of coffee, then spits it out and coughs.
Michonne: Goddamn, Oak! (hands cup back to Oak) You can't call it coffee when more than half's whiskey.
Michonne: Nah, I'm good.
Oak: (pours whiskey into his cup and takes a sip; pleasant sigh) Mmm... (said lovingly to himself) Coffee.
Berto: Hey, Siddiq, did you hear the one about the kittens who took over the boat?
Siddiq: (knows what's coming) What? Oh, no! Berto, no!
Berto: It was a mewtiny! (laughs)
Siddiq: (annoyed) Berto, just stop it now, okay? I'm warning you...
Pete: Goddamn, man.
Oak: I despised the lot of them when I first got on board, but they grow on you. Like mold, they are. (frustrated with himself) No, no, sorry. That's shit, isn't it?
Michonne: We're just a crew. Not friends, not family.
Michonne: They're growing on me too. Kinda nice that people can still joke around.
Michonne: How long does it take?
Oak: (brotherly) We worry about you, you know.
Oak: Before I joined up with Pete, my brother and I were cooped up in an old canning factory. Food for ages. Lotta fat and happy people. Then... a young girl got... taken. We followed her trail. Wasn't hard with all the blood. Ended up cornering the people who took her in this warehouse. All ten of us went in. Only I came out.
Michonne: Why'd you go after her?
Michonne: I would've gone in alone.
Michonne: You did the right thing.
Michonne says nothing.
Oak: Few weeks later, I came across Pete, a ways up the coast. He saw that look on my face and he offered me a job. Didn't ask any questions. Didn't turn me away. Just welcomed me in. Pete's a good goddamn egg in a rotten world.
Michonne: I don't always get Pete, but I'm glad people like him still exist.
Michonne: Pete shouldn't be so trusting. People will always let you down.
Michonne: I know you think Pete walks on water, but he makes mistakes too.
Oak: Like what?
Michonne: Hiring you.
Michonne says nothing.
Oak: (changing gears) Well. I think Berto's little routine is winding down, so we can finally play cards. Care to join us? It'd be nice to have you there. Besides, none of us can remember the rules. So it'll be the most... uh... unique game of Go Fish you've ever played.
Michonne: Yeah, deal me in.
Oak: Sounds like a challenge. You might regret it when I win that machete of yours.
Michonne joins the others.
Michonne: Thanks, but I'm good here.
Oak: Alright, we'll make room just in case. Just know that you don't have to play solitaire all the time.
Oak: You've got a hell of a poker face, Michonne. We'll make room in case you wanna put it to good use.
Oak will remember that.
Garage
Paige: Are you sure you wanna do this?
Sam: (determined) I need to see him. I need to see that bastard's face.
Paige opens the garage door. She, Sam, and Michonne enter.
Randall: (cordial) Well, hey there, Michonne. Sam. I knew you couldn't stay away.
Sam: Don't fucking talk to me.
Sam kicks Randall in the ribs several times. Paige grabs her and holds her back, but she continues to kick him.
Paige: Sam, stop!
Pete: (calm down) Easy, alright? (surprised) Jesus...
Paige: (to Michonne) Little help here! Please, I need a hand.
Michonne pushes Sam backward.
Sam: Hey! Let go of me!
Paige releases Sam.
Paige: Thank you.
Sam: Why did you stop me?!
Sam will remember that.
Sam: What are you--? Why are you protecting him? You know what he did.
Michonne: We could trade him for our safety, but not if he's beaten any worse than he is.
Michonne: He can't defend himself.
Sam: Neither could my dad.
Randall: (amused) You tryin' to be noble now, Michonne? You can't play that card after what you've done.
Michonne: You should be better than that, Sam. Don't be like him.
Michonne says nothing.
Randall: You think stopping her saved you? (laughs) That ship has sailed and sunk, ladies.
Michonne pulls Paige away.
Paige: What the--? Let go of me!
Paige will remember that.
Sam kicks Randall a few more times.
Paige: What the hell?! I'm just trying to help. We can't have this guy more damaged than he already is. She could've killed him.
Michonne: Keeping Sam in line isn't my job. She's responsible for her own actions.
Paige: Look, she's not in a good place right now.
Sam: (tense) I'm fine.
Michonne: Sam clearly needed it. Feel better?
Michonne: He deserves a lot worse.
Michonne says nothing.
Sam: Let go of me!
Paige pulls Sam backward and releases her.
Randall: (laughs) What's funny is you think me and my sister are the bad ones. (to Michonne, picking up the pace) But you're the one burned down our home, forced our people onto shore to be easy pickin's for the walkers. Families. Kids. Never did shit to you. Didn't stop to think about all the lives you were screwing up. All the shit they had to leave behind.
Pete: Ignore him, Michonne.
Randall: Probably burned beyond recognition now. You did that.
Michonne punches Randall.
Pete: (horrified) Michonne!
(If Michonne climbed the ladder.)
Michonne: You better keep your mouth shut.
Randall: I'm not upsetting you, am I?
(If Michonne entered through the window.)
Michonne: I saw what you did to the people on the Mobjack. You murdered all those children, so don't lecture me.
Michonne: (upset) That was an accident.
Randall: Tell that to the parents who lost their kids.
Pete: (reassuring) He's only trying to piss you off.
Randall: I'm not upsetting you, am I?
Paige: Oh, God. He's dead.
Pete: (aghast, to Michonne) I should have stopped you. (disappointed) How could you do this? That man was tied up. Defenseless. You're better than this.
Michonne: He got what he deserved.
Pete will remember that.
Michonne: He talked about my kids.
Pete will remember that.
Michonne: (regretful) I'm sorry, Pete. I... I couldn't control myself.
Pete will remember that.
Paige: (covers mouth; to Michonne; horrified by Randall) God, look at him.
Paige: (demanding, to Michonne) How could you? If he's dead... So are we.
Michonne: He got what he deserved.
Paige will remember that.
Michonne: He talked about my kids.
Paige will remember that.
Michonne: All I can say is, I'm sorry.
Paige will remember that.
Paige: (covers mouth; to Michonne; horrified by Randall) God, look at him.
Sam: I wanted this... I did, but seeing him now... I wish I had been the one to do it.
Paige: Sam...
Sam: It was my dad... my family... I should have killed Randall myself.
Michonne: (emphasis on "you") I didn't do it for you. I wanted to kill him.
(If Sam killed Zachary.)
Michonne: You already killed Zachary for what he did to Greg. Do you really wanna keep going down this road?
(If Sam didn't kill Zachary.)
Michonne: You're not a killer, Sam. Don't become one.
Michonne: You're right. If I could do it over again, I'd let you hold the wrench.
Michonne says nothing.
Paige: Sam, calm down--
Sam: (angry tears) My dad isn't even in the fucking ground yet and you want me to calm down?!
Paige: I...I didn't mean--
Sam: (crying; about Randall) He ruined everything! He killed-- (can't continue; crying)
Paige: (comforting) I know. I know.
Sam: (to Paige; upset) You don't know!
Norma: (over radio) Pick up, Michonne.
Pete: (over radio) Pick up, Michonne.
Michonne: (speaking over them) Wait... You hear that?
Norma: (over radio; demanding) Answer me. Now.
Pete: (over radio) Michonne, it's Pete. Please pick up. Something's happened.
Michonne picks up the radio.
Norma: (over radio) Michonne! You don't want to keep me waiting.
Randall: (amused) You tryin' to piss her off?
Michonne: (into radio) I'm right here.
Michonne: (into radio) Calm the fuck down.
Michonne: (into radio) What do you want?
Randall: Can't keep quiet forever.
Norma: (over radio) Enough of this silent treatment.
Norma: (over radio) You might be sittin' pretty, thinking you have the upper hand. But your luck has changed.
Siddiq: (over radio; weary) Michonne, it's Siddiq. They got the rest of the crew too; Oak and Berto. (finding his strength) Look, whatever this bitch asks, don't-- [do it]
Pete: (worried) Siddiq!
Pete: (over radio) I don't have much time.
Randall: Aww. Your buddy misses you. Cute.
Pete: (over radio) We need to talk.
Michonne: (into radio) Pete, where are you? Did you get away from Norma?
Michonne: (into radio) I'm right here.
Michonne: (into radio) Pete! Are you okay?
Pete: (over radio) God, I hope you're listening.
Norma: (over radio) Don't worry--they're all in good hands here. But them stayin' that way is up to you, so listen closely... I'm willing to trade: my brother for your friends. But anything you do to Randall, I'll do to them. Do you understand?
Norma: (over radio) I'll see how badly you hurt him.
Norma: (over radio) And he better not be as bad as you said.
Pete: Look, you don't owe me anything... but please... We have to get them back.
Pete: (over radio) Look, you don't owe us anything. I just want to keep them safe...
Norma: (over radio) That's my deal, Michonne.
Michonne: (into radio) I understand.
Norma will remember that.
(If Michonne answered the radio/talked to Norma.)
Michonne: (into radio) Calm down. Randall is doing just fine.
Randall: Oh, fuckin' really?
Norma will remember that.
Norma: (over radio) That's what I like to hear.
(If Michonne didn't answer the radio or let Randall answer.)
Michonne: (into radio) Stop worrying. I didn't touch him.
Norma will remember that.
Norma: (over radio) That's what I like to hear.
Michonne: (into radio) That goes both ways. Anything you do to them, I'll do to Randall.
Norma will remember that.
Norma: (over radio; yelling) Do you understand?!
Paige: You're not gonna say anything?
Norma: (over radio) We'll be there by sunrise. Be ready for us.
Randall reanimates as a walker.
Paige: Shit...
Randall: (laughs) So... what do you think's gonna happen next? (laughs again)
Paige pushes walker Randall, his hands bound, into a chair and ties him to it.
Michonne: She's coming here for her brother, and once she sees what we did to him...
Paige puts a bag over Randall's head.
Paige: At least he can walk... right?
Sam: If you can call that walking.
Pete: (losing hope) Let's just hope she doesn't take it out on my guys.
Paige: Norma wants her brother... It's not like there's another option here.
Michonne: The bag helps... a little.
Pete: (it won't work) She's gonna want to see his face.
Paige: Might be enough to stall her.
Michonne: We just need to fool Norma long enough to get my friends back.
Michonne: (sigh) This better work.
Paige: It will... I think.
Pete: It's risky.
Sam: (frustrated) Even if it does work, then what?
House
Paige pushes Randall, his hands bound, into a chair and ties him to it.
Randall: (laughs) What? There somethin' on my face?
Paige: The bruises aren't so bad... right?
Paige puts a bag over Randall's head.
Randall: (amused) I'm pretty sure she'll notice the fingers.
Sam: Shut up.
Paige: Maybe it won't matter.
Pete: This has to work.
Randall: (amused) Keep on hoping if you want.
Michonne: Norma's not gonna be happy when she sees him like this.
Paige: Then we don't let her see him.
Pete: How long do you think we can keep that up?
Sam: How long is that gonna last?
Michonne: It could be worse, you know. At least he's not dead.
Michonne: We'll get our friends back alive.
Michonne: I'll get my friends back. Alive.
Michonne: That bag'll help cover his injuries. Some of them, at least.
Pete: She's gonna want to see his face.
Paige: Might be enough to stall her.
Michonne says nothing.
Sam: The minute you hand him over, she's gonna take that bag off his head. What then?
Randall: (laughs) You all have no idea what you're in for.
Sam: He's right.
Sam leaves the room, and the others follow her.Sam: Norma's not gonna leave us alone. She won't stop just because we gave her her brother back.
Sam: Sure, you kept him alive, but we still burned all their shit...
Sam: Even if he was alive, we still burned all their shit...
Paige: So we run. After you trade for your friends, we haul ass to the back gate and get the hell out of here.
Sam: (hurt) But she'd take the house.
Paige: Let her have it!
Pete: Wouldn't she expect us to run?
Paige: She knows where we are now. Hiding isn't an option. So let's just go.
Sam: Stop.
Michonne: It might work.
Michonne: It's not gonna be that easy, Paige. If we run, they'll chase us.
Michonne: Where do you propose we go?
Paige: We just have to be quick. The minute your guys are inside, we're out of here.
Sam: (muttering) I can't fucking listen to this.
Paige: (confused; to herself) W--wha--?
Sam walks away.
Michonne: Sam, come back here!
Michonne: (calling out) Sam, where are you going?
Michonne: (calling after Sam) We're not done here.
Paige: (demanding) Sam...
Sam leaves the house. Paige and Michonne turn to follow her.
Pete: I'll watch him.
Paige: He's not going anywhere.
Outside
Paige and Michonne follow Sam outside.
Paige: Sam!
Sam drags John's corpse across the courtyard.
Michonne: Sam, what the hell are you doing?
Michonne: Sam, stop! You're going to hurt yourself.
Michonne: Sam, where are you taking him?
Michonne says nothing.
Sam loses her grip and stumbles backward, falling to the ground and losing her sling.
Sam: (pain; falling) Ugh. (angry) Goddamn it!
Paige: Sam, stop!
Paige helps Sam get up, but she then shrugs her away.
Sam: (angry; crying) Maybe you're all ready to walk away, but I'm not just gonna leave him like this! (through tears) We couldn't give my mom a real funeral. My dad and I... had to bury her here. Just the two of us. He'd want to be with her. That's all I can give him.
Sam continues dragging John's body toward the grave.
Michonne: I understand. He should be buried with your mom.
Michonne: We don't have time for this. Not with Norma coming.
Michonne: There will be time to bury him later. Right now, we need to focus on Norma.
Paige: Sam, come on.
Paige: We have to be ready to leave.
Sam: (quiet but determined) I'm not going.
Paige: What? Sam, you can't still be thinking-- (cut off)
Sam: (points to grave; yelling; upset) My mom is here, Paige! Everything I have of her, and Greg... (determined; angry) If you wanna leave, go ahead! But I'm not coming with you!
Paige walks away, and Sam sinks to her knees.
Sam: (to herself; upset) Shit. (sobs)
Michonne turns around and hallucinates her daughters lying dead on the ground. She blinks, and when she opens her eyes she sees things as they actually are.
Sam: I'm sorry... (sniffle) But I--I can't go. This house meant everything to my dad. It's all I have left. I'm not just gonna abandon it.
Michonne: I won't force you to leave. If you want to stay, that's up to you.
Michonne: So what happens when Norma comes?
Michonne: I know you don't want to, but leaving might be your only option. It isn't safe here anymore.
Sam: I hope you're with me.
Sam: (gets up) No matter what happens... thank you. I owe you my life. (embarrassed) Sorry it took me so long to say it.
Sam starts dragging John's corpse again.
Sam: (effort - it’s not working) Come on.
Michonne grabs John's other arm.
Sam will remember this.
They drag John's corpse over to the patch of dirt, and Sam picks up a shovel.
Michonne puts her hand on Sam's arm.
Michonne: Sam, stop.
Sam will remember that.
Sam: (protesting) Please.
Sam sobs and gives up. Michonne reaches toward her, but she smacks her hand away.
Sam: Maybe I can't help him... But I'm not gonna let Norma take the rest of my family from me.
Sam sobs and gives up. Michonne reaches toward her, but she smacks her hand away.
Sam: Maybe I can't help him... But I'm not gonna let Norma take the rest of my family from me.
Sam: I've got some weapons stashed in my room. Old duffel bag... should look familiar. You should make sure everyone's armed before Norma gets here.
Michonne: Yeah.
Michonne enters the house.
House
Michonne hallucinates seeing Colette near the duffel bag, but realizes that it's actually James. She walks up to him and realizes he is holding a pistol.
Michonne: Hey.
James: I-I was just... (sheepish) Wanted to know what it felt like... I wasn't gonna shoot it. Just...
Michonne: Careful. You don't want to shoot yourself.
Michonne: You don't need that gun, James.
Michonne: And? How does it feel?
Michonne says nothing.
Michonne sets the duffel bag on the bed and sits down. She takes out a gun and checks the magazine.
Michonne: Empty.
Michonne fills the magazine with bullets. James sits next to her.
James: Can I help? I want to do something.
Michonne: I don't know if that's such a good idea.
James will remember that.
Michonne: Sure, go ahead. (passes magazine to James) Those slide in there. Round side forward.
James will remember that.
James: Never mind.
James: How could they just... die like that? Greg and Dad... I thought we were safe here. What am I supposed to do?
Michonne: Just keep your head down. Stay safe.
James: I'm not afraid.
Michonne: I didn't say you were. Sometimes the brave thing is to not fight.
Michonne: You have to be smart. That's how you survive.
Michonne: Everyone gets scared sometimes.
Michonne says nothing.
James: (angry tears) The guy who did it... killed my dad... He's gotta... I mean... The things he said... The way he was laughing about Dad. He can't get away with it.
Michonne: We hurt Randall for what he did.
Michonne: We have to give Randall back to his sister, James.
Michonne: You want to hurt him. Don't you? Careful. Feelings like that can get you in trouble.
James: He can't.
Michonne: Randall is dead, James. I killed him.
Michonne: He's... (doesn't like this idea) our best chance of surviving.
Michonne: You want to hurt him. Don't you? Careful. Feelings like that can get you in trouble.
James: He can't.
James: I heard you guys talking. There's more people coming... to the house. Sam's hurt. (choking up) If... if she... They can't hurt her too. We have to stop them.
Michonne: Your sister will be with me. I'll make sure she's safe.
Michonne: Sam needs you right now. Go. Help her.
Michonne: Your sister's tough. I wouldn't worry about her too much.
James: She can't... go away too.
James: Here. (hands gun to Michonne) I--I don't know if I'm ready... You know, to have one.
Michonne: Don't forget what I told you...
Michonne: If things go bad... keep out of sight.
Michonne: Play it smart and you'll be fine.
Michonne: It's okay to be scared. It means you're paying attention.
Michonne: Sam could use your help out there. Norma's on her way--things could go wrong in a hurry.
Michonne: Hang onto this... you don't know when you might need it. (hands gun back) Norma's on her way--things could go wrong in a hurry.
Michonne: Take this to your sister. (hands gun back) Norma's on her way--things could go wrong in a hurry.
Michonne says nothing.
James leaves.
Michonne: (looks at gun) Wish it didn't always come to this.
Michonne puts the duffel bag over her shoulder and leaves the room. She imagines Elodie and Colette running past her.
Outside, Sam barricades a window.
The radio crackles.
Crabber Male 7: (over radio) Janey, Rich... what's the hold up?
Rich: (over radio) Prisoners aren't cooperating. What do you want us to do?
Crabber Male 7: (over radio; frustrated sigh) We don't have time for this. Get 'em moving.
Make sure Paige has ammo.
Randall: Can't get enough, huh?
Michonne looks at Pete.
Michonne imagines that the photo depicts her daughters. She blinks and sees the photo as it is: a picture of the Fairbanks family having dinner together.
Michonne: Sam's mom... Looks like she was pretty sick.
Michonne: Not gonna be able to look at that the same way again.
One drawing depicts a cat next to a sunflower, and the other shows a cow near a house.
Michonne: Old record player.
Michonne turns on the music player. She hallucinates her daughters behind her, and turns it off.
One drawing depicts a boy riding a dinosaur, and the other is just scribbles.
Michonne opens the cabinet.
Michonne: Not much left. If we get pinned down, we won't last more than a few days on this stuff. (closes cabinet)
Michonne: Wow... She's been all over the world. Those days are long gone now.
Michonne: (looks at passport) Sam's passport. (looks at other passport) This must be her mother. (reading) Sophia Fairbanks. Almost out of space in these.
Michonne: Sam's mom wrote this... (reading) "Took Sam to see the Eiffel Tower."
Outside, Sam digs a grave, then touches her shoulder.
Outside, Sam barricades the window in front of her room.
Michonne: (to herself) I should leave him alone.
The doorframe is marked with "JF" and "AF".
The poster is a hand-drawn picture of a superhero with a "G" on his costume.
Michonne: I remember getting my law degree... doesn't mean much now.
It's a photo of John and Sophia.
Michonne: "John... Take care of our children and take care of yourself."
Michonne puts the letter back.
Michonne: "I'm sorry. I know that doesn't help or explain anything, but it's true. I can't stand watching you and the kids suffer, knowing what's going to happen to me... and what I'll become. Better to spare you that pain. I love you more than anything, Sophie."
Michonne: This must be how they reinforced the gate. Hope it keeps Norma out.
Michonne: Nearly empty.
Michonne: Worked better than I thought.
Michonne: Looks like they were ready for anything... almost anything.
Michonne: What a mess. Could've been a lot worse.
(If Randall is dead.)
Radio Comments
Rich: (over radio) Right behind you. Shit... walkers.
Janey: (over radio) Roamers... switching off.
Randall's Comments
Randall: Norma'll see right through this.
Randall: I'm a guest in this house. Where are your manners?
Randall: You just gonna keep ignoring me?
Randall: Not gonna stop and say hello?
Randall: (faux concern) Was that? Nah, I thought I heard Norma at the front door. Probably nothing.
Randall: (trying to get her attention) Hey, Michonne.Michonne goes outside. James sits in the yard near Sam, who is digging a grave or hammering boards over the windows.
Michonne: Hey, Sam.
Sam: Hey...
Sam: Thanks for... before. I couldn't have moved him myself.
Sam: Something you need?
Michonne: I ran into James inside. You should really go talk to him.
Michonne: Want a hand?
(If Michonne helped Sam.)
Michonne: Just make sure you don't take too long out there.
Sam: (effort) I'm trying. I just need to rest a little.
(If Michonne didn't help Sam.)
Michonne: I'm really sorry about your dad.
Sam: It's okay, I... You were right. We have more important things to worry about.Michonne says nothing.
Sam: Paige thinks we're not safe here. That we need to move on. Bet she's trying to convince you to leave too. She's wanted out of here for a while. Guess she's found her chance.
Michonne: I'm not leaving without you.
Michonne: You should try talking to Paige. Are you really ready to let her walk away? If you care about each other--
Michonne: I think Paige was right, Sam. We can't stay here. Think about it, is this house really worth dying over?
Sam: It's not just the house...Sam: I know I'm being harsh. I just wish she understood...
Sam: It's just... so much of this place is my dad. It's all of us. He worked his way up from nothing... took a job cleaning houses, paid his way through law school... When he bought this house, it was... it was proof that he'd made a better life for us. We grew up here, I... Maybe I'm crazy, but I can't let that all be for nothing. He was so proud of what he'd built. This place kept us safe. We were happy here.
Michonne: It's still a house, Sam. Just wood and brick. The people inside, Paige and your brothers, they're who you need to protect.
Michonne: I get it. The world tries to take everything you love. You have to hang on to what's important.
Michonne: Norma doesn't care about any of that. She's coming here and she's not gonna stop just because this place has sentimental value.
Michonne says nothing, looking away briefly.
Sam: You found the bag.
Michonne: Yeah. Here. (gives gun)
Sam: (reserved) I should get back to work.
Michonne goes back inside.Michonne decides not to approach.
Michonne takes the bag off Randall's head.
Randall: You know, my hands hurt a little bit. You got any ointment lyin' around? (laughs into coughs) Yeah, well. When Norma gets here, she'll bust down that little gate of yours... and tune you up good. Just march on in... Majestic as fuck...
Michonne: Come in here just like you did? Didn't work out too well for you.
Michonne: You can still call her off. Get her to let my friends go.
Michonne: Yeah. You've said.
Randall: Lay waste to this garbage house. (smaller) That's what's gonna happen. You watch.
Michonne puts the bag back over his head.
Randall: Don't be a stranger.
Pete: This is a mess. Can't believe how fucking stupid I was. I got so focused on finding people... I wasn't putting the crew first. (frustrated; upset) If I didn't insist on looking... If I didn't turn us around and lead us here... None of this would've happened.
Michonne: It wasn't stupid. You cared about finding your friends, there's nothing wrong with that.
Michonne: It's not your fault, Pete. You didn't know this would happen.
Michonne: Yeah, coming here was a mistake.
Michonne says nothing, looking away.
Pete: You'd think after all this time, after... everything we've had to do to survive, people would want to help each other. But, no, they're just guarding what's theirs and taking out whoever gets in their way. I don't know why I even bother trying to help anymore. It doesn't... it doesn't seem worth it. Maybe I was just fooling myself. I wanted to think their people worth helping. And now we all have to pay the price.
Michonne: This isn't you, Pete. You help people. You helped me. Don't give up.
Michonne: (trying to make a joke) Careful, Pete. You're starting to sound like me.
Michonne: Maybe you're right. Maybe... this time... it wasn't.
Michonne says nothing, looking away. Pete looks away briefly as well.
Pete: We just... we have to get my crew back. Hopefully my boat is still in one piece. (worried) Shit. (to himself) What the hell are we gonna do?
Pete: If Norma's coming for a fight...
Pete: If she takes that bag off...
Pete: Are we really prepared for that? These kids... they aren't up for this.
Michonne: Norma's not gonna stop. She may say she wants to make a deal, but I don't believe that for a second. We're gonna have to fight.
Pete will remember that.
Michonne: Norma says she wants to make a deal, and I believe her.
Pete will remember that.
Michonne: Sounds like Paige wants to run. Not the worst idea.
Pete will remember that.
Michonne says nothing, looking down.
Pete: (resigned) We'll do what we can, I guess.Pete: I'm fine, Michonne. Just make sure everyone else is ready when Norma comes.
Michonne gives Pete a gun.
Michonne: Here, Pete.
Pete: Thanks.Give Paige ammo upstairs.
Michonne goes upstairs.
Michonne: Is that... music?
Michonne turns around and imagines herself in the middle of a hallway, with her daughters a short distance ahead of her. As she runs toward them, they get farther away. She sinks to her knees in despair.
Michonne: I can't reach you!
Michonne: Here! Over here!
Michonne: Come back! (quieter) Come back to me.
Michonne says nothing.
The girls enter one of the rooms. Michonne opens the door and returns to the real world, realizing that she actually opened the door to closet where Alex is hiding. Next to him is a music box engraved with "Emily".
Michonne: (awkward) Can I come in?
Alex nods and Michonne enters the closet, closing the door behind her. She sits down next to him.
Michonne: You doin' okay in here? I bet that was scary before, when I brought your sister in like that. But she's okay now--
Michonne: I like that. It's pretty.
Michonne: I know you're scared, but you shouldn't hide. That only makes the bad stuff seem scarier.
Alex: This is, um, my fortress.
Alex: It keeps all the bad stuff out. I put pillows and blankets against the wall.
Michonne: Looks pretty sturdy. I bet it's kept you nice and safe for a long time. That's good.
Michonne: Was this your dad's idea?
Michonne: It's nice. But... it's not gonna protect you from what's out there.
Alex: In here, nothing can hurt me. Not even them.
Alex: I know what those monsters out there are... Wendigo. Grandma told me about them. It's what happens when someone... eats another person.
Michonne: (gently) Oh? I hadn't heard that one before.
Alex: Do they scare you too? They make lots of noise. Even at night.
Michonne: I'll tell you a secret. They scare me too sometimes.
Michonne: The monsters don't scare me. I scare the monsters.
Alex: Really?
Michonne: Yeah.
Michonne: Getting scared is normal.
Alex: Really?
Michonne: Happens to everyone sometimes.
Alex: But my dad's not scared of them.
Alex: I've been waiting for him. Where is he? Why didn't he come get me yet? Where is my dad?
Michonne: Your dad's not coming. He's... dead.
Alex: What?!
Michonne: I'm so sorry, Alex... Something terrible happened. (gentle) A bad man came, and hurt your dad. He... shot him.
Michonne: He can't come right now.
Alex: I want to wait here for my dad.
Michonne: Alex...
Alex: Why won't you talk to me?
Alex: (starting to cry) No! I don't believe you. I want to see him! Please.
Michonne: Sometimes... awful things happen. And there's nothing we can do about it.
Michonne: It happened very fast. I promise you, he never felt a thing.
Michonne: The bad man who did it, we got him. He's not going to hurt anyone else.
Michonne hugs Alex.
Michonne says nothing.
Alex: Did my dad... become one of them? It's what happens, right? He did, didn't he?
Michonne: (gently) No. He was shot in the head. When someone dies, you put a bullet or something sharp right here (touches her forehead), and they don't turn. Okay?
Michonne: No, your dad didn't become one of them. He's still your dad.
Michonne: (soothing) No, no, don't think about things like that. We just need to keep going. That's all we have to do. The rest doesn't matter.
Michonne says nothing.
Alex: Please, tell me.Alex: It's not fair.
Michonne: Alex, you need to be strong, okay?
Michonne: It's gonna be okay, Alex. I promise. Your sister... James... they'll look out for you.
Michonne: You deserve to know the truth. I didn't want to lie about what happened to your dad.
Michonne says nothing.
Alex: (starting to cry) I just... I want my dad... I want Greg back... I want everything to go back to the way it was. Daddy...
Michonne: I'm sorry... I'm sorry I couldn't bring your brother home.
Michonne: I wish it could go back too. I wish it all the time.
Michonne: I know, I know, but it just doesn't work that way. We can't change what happened to Greg.
Michonne says nothing.
Alex: (through tears) When Greg... when he... did he become one of them? It's what happens, right? He did, didn't he?
Michonne: No, no, don't think about things like that. We just need to keep going. That's all we have to do. The rest doesn't matter.
Michonne: No. Your brother didn't become one of them. Greg is still Greg.
Michonne: (gently) He did, but... I made sure he wouldn't stay that way. When someone dies, you put a bullet or something sharp right here, (points to her forehead) and they're not a wendigo anymore. Okay?
Alex: Please tell me.
Alex: Is that what's gonna happen to me? Am I gonna die and... change into one too?
Michonne: Not for a very, very long time.
Alex will remember that.
Michonne: I won't sugar coat it for you. (gentle; instructional) We all turn into walkers when we die.
Alex will remember that.
Alex: (sniffles) Thanks.
Michonne: No. I'm going to protect you. Nothing out there will hurt you.
Alex will remember that.
Alex: I am, aren't I? (sniffles) No one wants to tell me anything.
Janey: (over radio) Two and three checked in. Coming up on the road now.
Norma: (over radio) Hey, keep the chatter to a minimum. Our friends are listening.
Michonne: Thanks for letting me see your fortress.
Alex smiles and turns the music box back on. Michonne steps out of the room and hallucinates Elodie and Colette running outside of Paige's room. She enters Paige's room.
Paige: Oh, hey. I didn't hear you come in.
Paige: Were you able to talk some sense into her?
Paige: Or do you still think digging a hole is a good use of Sam's time?
Paige: Or is she still out there digging a hole in the ground?
Paige: I've never seen her like this. She's... she's just not thinking.
Michonne: Sam wants to defend the house. She wants to fight.
Michonne: Give her some space, okay? She's grieving.
(If Michonne helped Sam or did nothing.)
Michonne: I'm not gonna stop her from burying her father.
(If Michonne stopped Sam.)
Michonne: Relax. I got her to stop.
Paige: Whatever.
Paige: I don't know why Sam thinks she can protect her brothers here. I'll be out of your hair soon enough. Never belonged here anyway. Same as you. That's one thing we got in common. Squatters in other people's lives.
Michonne: But that's not why you're leaving.
Michonne: This is your home.
Michonne: What do you mean, same as me?
Paige: I didn't mean to offend you. I just... I know what it's like, running from... whatever. I spent most of my life doing that.
Paige: Norma's gonna be here soon, if they're not ready... I won't stick around just to watch this fall apart. She's so... stubborn, though. I just hope it doesn't get her killed this time.
Michonne: You can't leave James and Alex. They've lost enough today.
Paige will remember that.
Michonne: Then stay. Sam needs you. You're gonna regret it if you leave. Trust me.
Michonne: You're the only one here who can convince Sam to leave. Talk to her.
Paige: I tried.
Michonne: Try again. She needs to be ready to run. And so do the kids.
Michonne says nothing.
Michonne: Here.
Michonne puts the ammo box on the bed. Paige grabs it and stuff it into her backpack.
Talk to Sam downstairs.
Michonne goes back downstairs and Sam enters the house.
Sam: Oh, Michonne.
Sam: Oh, hey.
Sam: You found the bag.
Michonne: Yeah. Here. (gives gun)
Sam: Thanks.
Michonne: As ready as we're gonna get.Sam: I'm looking for Alex. Have you seen him? I want him to be there when I say a few words for Dad...
Sam: Even if I couldn't bury him...
Sam: He wasn't at Mom's funeral. He should be there for this.
(If Michonne didn't say John died.)
Michonne: Alex asked about his father. I didn't know what to tell him.
Sam: I'll...I'll go talk to him.
(If Michonne said John died.)
Michonne: Alex asked about his father. So...I told him what happened.
Sam: (surprised) Oh. (realizing he's upset) Shit. I...I should check on him then.
Michonne: Leave him. Alex isn't ready. For any of this.
Sam: Maybe not, but he should have a chance to say goodbye.
Michonne: He's hiding in his closet.
Sam: Never mind. I'll find him.
Sam: I'll meet you outside?
Sam: (upset) I just...I wish he didn't have to see him like this.
Sam walks away.
Outside
Michonne stands at the gravesite. John is either buried or covered with a tarp. If she helped Sam, she touches Sophia's gravestone. If she didn't help Sam, the tarp is blown up by the wind, and she hallucinates her daughters lying dead beneath it.
Colette: Mommy? Don't go.
Sam, James, and Alex step outside.
Alex: (crying) No! I don't believe you!
The Fairbanks walk up to the grave. Alex cries, and James wraps his arm around him. The four of them stand there in silence for several moments. Sam takes a few deep breaths.
James: (small) Sam? You okay?
Sam: (crying) Greg and Dad...? (exasperated) I just... I don't... really know what to say. Where am I supposed to start? I don't know...
Michonne: Just say what he meant to you.
Michonne: Maybe you don't need to say anything. It's okay to just... be here together.
Michonne: I've never been very good at these things. So I'm not the best person to ask for advice.
Sam: I... I think it should just be family here.
Michonne: I'll give you a moment.
Sam's Eulogy
Sam: Dad was... always thinking about other people. He once told me he'd happily suffer anything if it meant keeping us happy, healthy.... But I think he suffered more than any one man deserves. He lost mom... And Greg... (small laugh) Do you remember... when we caught them trying to play catch in the yard?
James: Dad was awful at it.
Sam: (small laugh) Yeah. He kept dropping the ball... didn't matter how easy Greg threw it. But, stubborn as he is, dad kept trying. Then Greg started dropping it on purpose to make him feel better.Michonne walks up to the house.
Pete: Hey, you okay? Michonne?
Michonne: Don't worry about me. I'm... okay.
Michonne: I'm just worried about the crew. If Norma hurt them...
Michonne: Just... thinking about my kids. I keep seeing them...
Pete: When you're quiet, it's more like... disquiet. Like a storm's on the way.
Michonne: Whatever normal is... it doesn't exist anymore. No matter how much you want it to.
Michonne: Your boat comes close to that. You kind of forget everything else while you're out there.
Michonne: It may seem nice, but it won't keep them alive. They don't know how to survive out there.
Michonne says nothing.
Pete: I guess that's a "yes".Pete will remember that.
Paige steps outside.
Paige: Hey.
Paige: You alright? You look a little... Well, like you're losing it a little bit. Sorry.
Michonne: I'm fine.
Paige: I can tell you're not. I've been there.
Michonne: I'm just worried about Pete and the crew.
Paige: You'll get them back.
Michonne: Just remembering my kids.
Paige: Did they... you know...
Michonne: I don't know. I wasn't with them.
Paige: You don't want to talk about it. I get it.
Paige: I thought about joining them, but it felt... weird. I mean... I live here, but I'm still not family, you know? They treat me like I am. But I know that's not true. Family is... different.
Michonne: I know how that is. I've tried starting over, but... It felt somehow... disrespectful to the family I lost.
Michonne: These days, families aren't the people you're born to. It's the people you stay with. The people who care about you. Pete's crew... they're a family.
Paige will remember that.
Michonne: It's okay to be an outsider. Better than getting attached to people you might lose.
Paige will remember that.
Michonne says nothing.
Paige: I decided to stay.
Paige: Don't get cocky, it had nothing to do with what you said.
Michonne: (not buying it) Uh-huh.Paige: It's gonna be tough leaving this place. I just hope I can convince Sam to go with me.
Paige: It's gonna be tough leaving this place. I just wish Sam would go too.
Norma's group bangs on the gate.
Norma: Michonne!
Sam: She's here!
Everyone runs into the house.
House
Sam: (muttering to herself) I thought we had more time.
Paige: It's okay. It's gonna be okay.
Alex: (scared) Sam?
Sam: Just go upstairs with your brother, okay? I need you to hide until I come get you.
James: (frightened) What's gonna happen?
Alex: (frightened, to Michonne) Is she gonna hurt us?
James: You'll stop them, right? Right?
Sam: Just get upstairs.
Michonne: We're just gonna talk, okay?
Michonne: Whatever happens...I'll protect you.
Michonne: Stay out of sight and you'll be safe. Norma's not after you.
Sam: Go, James. Please!
Pete: Everything will be fine.
Sam: Stay together. No matter what.
James: We will.
Alex: Okay.
Sam hugs the boys. They then run upstairs.
Sam grabs Paige's rifle.
Sam: Here. (puts rifle in Paige's hands)Paige: I can get a clear shot of the front gate from upstairs. I'll cover you. If I can... I hope it doesn't come to that. This is worst-case scenario, right?
Michonne: Are you sure?
Michonne: Thank you.
Michonne: (stern) You better not miss.
Michonne says nothing.
Sam: Paige, if anything goes wrong, I need you to take care of James and Alex.
Paige: Don't talk like that!
Sam: (cutting off Paige) Paige, please.
Paige: Sam, you know I'll--
They hear a crashing sound outside. Sam nods and Paige goes upstairs.
Michonne: Grab Randall and meet us outside. (takes a deep breath)
Outside
Sam, Michonne, Randall, and determinantly Pete walk outside. Sam holds onto Randall and points a gun at him. Paige gets into position behind a window, holding her rifle.
Sam: It's quiet out there. You ready out there?
Pete: Anything goes wrong out there...I've got your back.
Sam: Getting your crew back... It's not gonna be easy.
Michonne: Just stay alert and be ready for anything. We don't know what Norma's planning.
Sam will remember that.
Michonne: We just have to be careful not to provoke her. I don't want this to turn into a fight.
Sam will remember that.
Michonne: This isn't gonna stay peaceful for long. Be ready to fight when I tell you.
Sam will remember that.
Sam: We'll follow your lead.
Michonne pushes the gate open and steps outside to find Norma, determinantly with Pete next to her.
Norma: It's just me.
Pete steps outside the gate.
Sam: What's going on?
Norma: I had my people hang back a bit. I wanted to talk first. Just us. Clear the air a little.
Pete: What's your game?
Pete: Just hear her out, Michonne.
Sam: (aside to Michonne) I don't trust her.
(If Michonne kept Pete around.)
Michonne: I'm not really interested in hearing what you have to say. I just want my people back.
(If Michonne let Pete go.)
Michonne: I don't wanna hear anything you have to say until I get Pete back.
Michonne: Where's Pete's crew?
Norma: They're not far. Don't worry.
Pete: Why should we believe you?
Pete: (confirming) They're fine.
Michonne: Okay, start talking.
Norma: Okay, then. I can see why you're skeptical.
Norma draws a knife and cuts Pete's bindings. He walks over to Michonne.
Norma: See? I can be reasonable.
Pete: (trying to make a joke) Thought you could get rid of me, huh? (relieved) Michonne...
Michonne hugs Pete.
Michonne: Glad to have you back, Pete.
Michonne: (serious) Are you okay? Did she hurt you?
Michonne says nothing.
Norma: Listen... Monroe is... gone. Sunk down in the water like... (cracking just a bit) Everything I built... You and I... we've each taken from the other. All I want now is my brother back.
Norma: And he better be okay. Like you said.
Norma: (warning tone) And he better not be hurt too bad.
Norma: That's all. And I'll leave you be.
Sam: (aside to Michonne) You buying any of this?
Michonne: That's it? Just like that and you walk away?
Michonne: You'll get Randall after you hand over my friends.
Norma: (growing agitated) After everything you've done, you expect me to simply hand over your friends, just like that?
Norma: (incensed) I brought you Pete. You'll get the rest when I get my brother.
Michonne reaches toward her machete.
Pete: Careful, Michonne...
Norma: A show of good faith, then.
Michonne: He's right here.
Sam shoves Randall outside the gate.
Norma: Randall, you okay?
Randall: (muffled) Hey, Norma. Get this fucking thing off me!
Randall growls.
Sam pulls Randall back inside the gates.
Norma: Just hang on. I gotcha. One good turn...Norma: Alright. You need more. I'm not idiot, I get that. A show of good faith, then.
Norma takes out a flare gun and fires it into the sky. Walkers take notice of it.
Norma: Any minute now.
The rest of Norma's crew arrives with Berto, Oak, and Siddiq.
Norma: Safe and sound. Just like I said.
Norma: Now... give me Randall and we can go our separate ways.
Norma: Now...I want to see my brother.
Gabby: We're all homeless because of her!
Zachary: Gabby, it wasn't her fault!
Zachary: Gabby, stop.
Gabby: They should be dead!
Jonas: They burned our homes! Murdered Zachary!
Norma: (commanding) Now be quiet!
Norma: Michonne, please. I just want my brother. Let's be done with this. Deal?
Norma: (tense) My brother. Now. I've given you what you wanted. I just want to see him.
Michonne: I want Pete's crew first... then I'll give you Randall.
Norma: (pissed) I think I've been more than reasonable.
Norma points a gun at Oak's head.
Michonne: Oak!
Pete: Hey! Put the gun down.
Norma: I could shoot him and still have two more to spare. So you're gonna do what I've asked. Now. I came here, willing to talk. But if you're gonna insist on being difficult...
Pete: Don't hurt him, alright?
(If Michonne didn't already show Randall.)
I gotcha. Now hand him over and we'll be done with this.
(If Michonne showed Randall.)
Michonne shoots Randall in the leg.
Norma: Randall!
Michonne: You're not gonna shoot him. You may have more of my guys, but this piece of shit over here is all you've got... And there's still plenty I can do to hurt him.
Norma: I'm giving you one last warning, Michonne.
(If Michonne didn't already show Randall.)
I gotcha.
Norma: See, we can work together. Release that one.
Norma: You better hope when I take that mask off he don't look as bad as he sounds.
Norma: Release that one.
Jonas: It's okay. We just need this to be over.
Jonas: This is bullshit.
Gabby unties Siddiq, and he walks over to the others.
Pete: Glad you're safe, man.
Norma: I made good on my end, now it's your turn. Give me Randall.
Norma points a gun at Oak's head.
Michonne: Oak!
Pete: Hey! Put the gun down.
Norma: I could shoot him and still have one more to spare. So you're gonna do what I've asked. Now. I came here, willing to talk. But if you're gonna insist on being difficult...
Pete: Don't hurt him, alright?
Michonne: Here, take him.
(If Michonne showed Randall.)
Michonne: He's all yours.
Sam takes Randall outside the gates.
Michonne: You have three of my men, I only have one of yours. Send one of my friends over... then you can have Randall.
Norma: (tense) You get one. That's it. (points to Siddiq) Release that one.
Jonas: It's okay. We just need this to be over.
Zachary: Let him go, Gabby.Jonas: This is bullshit.
Gabby puts her rifle away and goes up to Siddiq, undoing his binds. Siddiq walks over to the others
Pete: Glad you're safe, man.
Norma: I made good on my end, now it's your turn. Give me Randall.Norma: (pissed) I think I've been more than reasonable. Show me Randall.
Michonne: Here, take him.
Pete: (worried) Now's not the time to screw around.
Norma: You should listen to your friend.
Michonne: Here, take him.
Gabby: Randall isn't worth all this shit.
Norma: Gabby, listen to me--
Gabby: After everything they've done, you're still giving them more chances! We deserve retribution.
Zachary: Don't do this!
Jonas: Stop!
Jonas: Who gives a shit about Randall?!
Norma: Jonas, don't!
Jonas: If you're not gonna punish them for what they've done, I will.
Gabby: We deserve retribution.
Norma: Not like this!
Pete: No!
Gabby or Jonas shoots Berto in the head.
Pete: (anguished) Berto!
Norma: Everyone put your guns down!
Sam: I knew we couldn't trust them!
Norma: Don't! Stand down! Please. Don't hurt him!
Gabby: If you're not gonna do anything, we have to!
Norma: That's not your call! Please...
Michonne signals Paige, and she shoots Norma in the shoulder.
Crabber Female 4: They shot her!
Jonas tries to shoot Michonne, but Pete shoots him in the head.
Gabby: Jonas...
Norma: Fuck!
Norma reaches for her gun, but Oak knocks her to the ground.
Pete: Oak, run!
Oak and determinantly Siddiq run into the gate.
Randall slams the back of his head into Sam's face and starts to run away.
Sam shoots Randall, knocking the bag off his head, then shoots him again, killing him.
Norma: Randall.Michonne: You better get your people under control!
Michonne: We have to even things up somehow.
Norma: (apologetic, desperate) I can make this right.
Gabby tries to shoot Michonne, but Pete shoots her in the head.
Jonas: Gabby...
Jonas tries to shoot Michonne, but Pete shoots him in the head.
Norma: I'll give you that one, alright? We're even.
Norma: As long as you let Randall go. (stressed; threatening) I'm not gonna ask you again. No one else has to die.
Pete: Is that a threat?
Norma: It doesn't need to be. Hand him over.
Pete: Just do it, Michonne.
(If Norma gave Siddiq up.)
Michonne: I want Oak on his way over. He starts walking and I'll send Randall out.
Norma: Maybe you didn't hear me.
Norma shoots Oak in the stomach.
Pete: Oak!
Oak kicks Norma's leg, knocking her over.
Pete: Oak! Please get up.
Randall slams the back of his head into Sam's face and starts to run away.
Sam shoots Randall, knocking the bag off his head, then shoots him again, killing him.
Norma: Randall.
(If Norma didn't give Siddiq up.)
Michonne: I want Oak and Siddiq. They start walking and I'll send Randall out.
Norma: Maybe you didn't hear me.
Norma shoots Oak in the stomach.
Pete: Oak!
Oak kicks Norma's leg, knocking her over.
Pete: Siddiq, hurry up!
Siddiq runs into the gates.
Randall slams the back of his head into Sam's face and starts to run away.
Sam shoots Randall, knocking the bag off his head, then shoots him again, killing him.
Norma: Randall.
Michonne: Okay, you can have him.
Norma: Good.
Pete: Here we go.
Michonne shoves Randall, and he goes over to Norma.
Norma takes the bag off his head. Oak and determinantly Siddiq run over to the others.
Michonne: Run!
Pete: Hurry!
Pete: (under his breath) This better fucking work.
Pete: What's wrong with him?
Sam: (in a whisper) Michonne killed him. He's a rotter.
Pete: (to Michonne) You're insane. Do you know what she'll do when she finds out?
Michonne: Can't do anything about that now.
Pete: Yeah.
Michonne: It was a mistake.
Pete: (struggling to keep it at a whisper) Some mistake!Michonne: (cold) You know he deserved it.
Michonne says nothing, shaking her head.
Randall turns around and walks back toward them.
Norma: Randall? Randall? You okay?
Randall walks toward Norma, and she takes the bag off his head.
Norma: Randall.
Norma shoots Randall in the head. Oak and determinantly Siddiq start to run toward them. Norma points her gun at him/them, but Sam shoots her in the shoulder.
Norma: Fuck!
Norma reaches for her gun, but Oak knocks her to the ground.
Pete: Oak, run!
Oak and determinantly Siddiq run into the gate.
Michonne signals Paige, and she shoots Norma in the shoulder.
Norma: Fuck!
Norma reaches for her gun, but Oak knocks her to the ground.
Pete: Oak, run!
Oak and determinantly Siddiq run into the gate.
Norma: Maybe you didn't hear me.
Norma shoots Oak in the stomach.
Pete: Oak!
Oak kicks Norma's leg, knocking her over.
Pete: Siddiq, hurry up!
Oak kicks Norma's leg, knocking her over.
Randall slams the back of his head into Sam's face and starts to run away.
Sam shoots Randall, knocking the bag off his head, then shoots him again, killing him.
Norma: Randall.
Norma: Just let me see my brother... Take that bag off him. I want to see his face. Let me get a good look.
Michonne takes the bag off Randall's head.
Norma: What did you do to him? Answer me. Now!
Michonne: He killed Sam's father. An innocent man. He deserved worse.
Michonne: He's still alive, isn't he? What more do you want?
Michonne: Do you want your brother back or not?
Michonne says nothing.
Norma: Just hand him over.
Pete: Here we go.
Michonne shoves Randall, and he goes over to Norma. Oak and determinantly Siddiq run over to the others.
Michonne: Run!
Sam and Pete start shooting walkers. Norma's group does the same.
Pete: Hurry!
Oak/Siddiq run into the gate. Norma cuts Randall's binds. Randall charges at Michonne and tackles her to the ground, holding down her gun-wielding hand and strangling her. She manages to point the gun at his face and shoot him.
Norma: Randall!
Pete: Oh, my God.
Michonne: Norma, I'm... I'm sorry.
Norma: (near tears) Randall...
Sam lets go of Randall.
Michonne: He killed Sam's father. An innocent man. No fucking reason.
Norma: (near tears) Randall...
Sam lets go of Randall.Michonne shoves Randall.
Michonne: You can see him when we make the trade.
Norma: You little-- (masters herself) Fine.
Pete: Here we go.
Michonne shoves Randall, and he goes over to Norma.
Norma takes the bag off his head. Oak and determinantly Siddiq run over to the others.
Michonne: Run!
Pete: Hurry!
Pete: This better fucking work.
Pete: What's wrong with him?
Sam: Michonne killed him. He's a rotter.
Pete: You're insane. Do you know what she'll do when she finds out?
Michonne: Can't do anything about that now.
Pete: Yeah.
Michonne: It was a mistake.
Pete: Some mistake.Michonne: You know he deserved it.
Norma: Maybe you didn't hear me.
Norma shoots Oak in the stomach.
Pete: Oak!
Oak kicks Norma's leg, knocking her over.
Pete: Oak! Please get up.
Sam shoves Randall forward. He falls to his knees. She shoots him in the shoulder, then in the head.
Norma: Randall...Norma: Kill them!
Michonne: (urgent, yelling) Get to the house! Now!
Sam, Pete, and Michonne get inside the gates. Michonne closes them and leans against them while Norma's group tries to push it open.
Michonne: Move!
Pete: Michonne...
Michonne: Go!
Pete: Michonne! Now!
Norma: Get that gate open! Hurry! Stop her!
Michonne gets up and runs toward Pete while he fires at Norma's group.
Michonne hides behind the fountain. Norma's group shoots at the nearby walkers and invades the yard. They close the gates.
Crabber Male 7: Ugh! We can't hold it!
Female 4: Don't let them get in!
Michonne shoots one of the soldiers, Janey, and a walker. She hallucinates seeing her daughters in front of her. Rich fires at Michonne but gets grabbed by a walker. The shot knocks the gun out of her hands and disorients her. Norma runs up to her and grabs her machete. Michonne dodges as Norma tries to her slash at her. Michonne kicks her in the leg, knocking her over and making her drop the weapon.
Norma: Agh! Fuck!
Michonne starts to crawl toward the machete, but Norma grabs her leg and drags her backward, then slams her face into a puddle of water.
Norma: Fucking stay down! Get the rest of them! Burn the whole fucking house down!
Michonne slams the back of her head into Norma's face, then bites her hand. Norma picks up her gun, and Michonne picks up her machete.
Michonne charges toward Norma, holding a stick.
Jonas: (shouting to Zachary; worried) Zachary, don't--
Zachary hits Norma with the stick.
Zachary: Leave her alone! She didn't--
Norma shoots Zachary in the face.
Norma spins around to see walkers nearby.
Norma: What the--
Norma shoots at the walkers. Pete opens the front door.
Pete: Michonne!
Some of Norma's group shoots at Pete and misses. Walkers start to overwhelm them. Michonne charges at Norma and slices her arm with the machete. A walker bites Norma's neck, and she shoots it. Michonne slices her arm off completely, making her drop the gun. Walkers grab Norma and start devouring her.
Norma: Wait! No, no, wait! God! No!
Crabber Female 4: No! Norma!
Michonne picks up the gun.
Michonne shoots Norma in the head.
Norma: Please, stop!
Walkers disembowel and devour Norma.
Pete: Come on!
Michonne runs into the house and Pete closes the door behind her.
House
Pete and Siddiq shoot through the windows. Sam tosses a new pistol to Siddiq. Michonne ducks as Norma's group shoots at her. Walkers approach the house.
Pete: We gotta hold the door with something!
Michonne and Pete barricade the doors with a grandfather clock.
Pete: (worried) I thought you weren't gonna make it for a minute.
Siddiq: They stopped firing.
Paige runs downstairs.
Paige: They're surrounding the house! We have to get out of here!
Sam: Where are the boys?
Paige: Upstairs!
Sam: Alex! James!
Paige: Hurry up!
A soldier throws a molotov through the window.
Michonne shoots the soldier in the chest, killing him.
The soldier runs away, and escapes.
The molotov hits the floor inside the house and spreads fire.
Siddiq: Fuck!
Pete: Get down!
Paige: Sam!
Michonne jumps to the side as another soldier throws another molotov.
Sam: (yelling for them) Alex! James!
Paige: Sam!
Colette: Mommy, where are you?
Michonne hallucinates seeing her daughters.
Michonne: Girls!
Michonne crawls through the burning house, switching between hallucination and reality.
Colette: Help us, please!
Another molotov is thrown into the house. Michonne moves a dresser and wardrobe out of the way and tries to open a door. She uses her machete to pry it open and stumbles into the next room. She hallucinates a cabinet falling in front of Colette.
Colette: It's okay, Mama.
Michonne crawls underneath the cabinet, but it collapses onto her. A walker enters through one of the doors, and she kills it, then escapes from beneath the cabinet. Michonne sees Elodie run off.
Elodie: Mama!
Michonne sees a walker grabs Colette. She impales it and the walker behind it on her machete, then crushes them with the clock and picks up her weapon.
Colette: Mommy?! I can't see you.
Michonne: I'm coming.
Michonne goes upstairs and opens a door. She sees one of the illusory toys again, and hallucinates her daughters in the room with her.
Michonne: (hurt; sad) I'm not gonna hurt you.
Michonne: I have to get you out of here. It's not safe.
Michonne: Why does this keep happening? What's going on?
Michonne says nothing.
Michonne coughs as the flames engulf the room.
Michonne: I--I should've been there... with you. But I wasn't. I wasn't and you... Every day, I wish I could go back and change it... but I can't.
Michonne: What do you want me to do? I can't go back. I can't save you. I can't fix this. I wish I hadn't... There's nothing I can do.
Michonne: I know you're not real. None of this is. But I keep seeing you... everywhere. I don't know how to make it stop. Just tell me what you want.
Michonne says nothing.
Michonne's imaginary phone dings and she takes the call.
Dominic: Michonne! It's Dominic. Where the hell are you?
Colette: (scared - in the distance) What's happening?!
Dominic: (hurried; to the girls - turning away from the phone) Go pack your things, okay? We have to go!
Colette: Where's Mommy?
Dominic: (to Michonne; frantic) We tried to wait. We're heading to Donna's. Just...
Colette: (trying to get him to listen) Dad!
Dominic: (freaked out) She'll be fine! Come on!
Colette: No! She'll come look for us! We have to be here!
Dominic: (to Michonne; hurried) Michonne. If you're still [alive]... just stay safe, okay? They need you.
Michonne: (tearing up) I'm so sorry. I don't know what else to say. I'm just...I'm sorry.
Michonne: (tearing up) Did... did you get out? Did you make it? I need to know.
Michonne: (tearing up) I did look for you. I came back... I promise. I was just too late.
Michonne says nothing.
Michonne falls to her knees and sobs. The girls walk up to her.
Michonne: You can't-- [stay here]
Michonne: Please-- [just stay with me]
Michonne: I still-- [love you]
Michonne says nothing.
The ceiling starts to break, and beams fall down.
Michonne: (anguished) No!
Michonne runs up to her daughters, but beams fall onto them, knocking her to the ground.
James: (processed, very muffled) Help! Somebody!
Alex: Sam! (cough) Sam!
James: Help!
Alex: Help us!
James: (louder, panicked) Anybody?!
Michonne: I'm here!
Michonne: Stay where you are?
Michonne: Where are you?
Michonne says nothing.
James tries to open the closet door, but it is blocked by a fallen beam.
Alex: Don't leave us... please.
James: We can't get out... Don't leave us.
Colette: Don't leave us! Please don't go! Please don't go.
Alex: Don't go.
James: Help!
Michonne chops and kicks the beam until it breaks. She opens it, and James and Alex run out. Sam enters the room!
Sam: Michonne! Have you seen--?
Alex: Sam!
Sam: (overcome; relieved) I thought you were dead... (hugs Alex and James) Oh, I was so worried! Are you okay? I thought I wasn't gonna find you.
Michonne: Sam. We have to go!
Michonne: They were calling out for you.
Michonne: Where are the others? Pete and-- (cough)
Sam: It's time to go, alright?
Sam: We can get out (cough) through Greg's room. (to the kids) Follow me. (coughing, then really serious) Stay right with me, okay?
James: Okay.
Michonne: Go!
The group runs through the house. Michonne dodges a falling beam. Sam opens a window in Greg's room and Michonne closes the door.
Sam: Michonne, hurry!
Michonne hallucinates her daughters. Colette grabs her hand.
Sam: James!
Colette: Don't go.
Michonne hallucinates that she is at the door to Dominic's apartment in the days before the apocalypse, in the moment she saw her daughters last.
Michonne: I have to go.
Colette: Why?
Michonne: I wish I could stay, but I can't.
Colette: Why?
Michonne: This isn't goodbye. I'll see you again.
Colette: When?
Elodie: Mama?
Dominic: Say goodbye, girls. Your mother has to leave.
Elodie: Please, Mama?
Colette: Stay here... with us.
Dominic: She can't. Just let her go.
Michonne: I can't... do this, Dominic.
Michonne: Dominic, please... just... let me say goodbye.
Michonne: Dominic, please... give us a minute.
Dominic: Say goodbye, girls.
Sam: (processed, muffled) Come on, Alex!
Sam helps Alex through the window. He climbs down the roof to join the others.
Sam: (processed) What are you doing? (coughs)
Colette: (near tears; don't leave) No...
Dominic: Girls, enough. Let her leave if that's what she wants.
Sam: (processed; desperate) Michonne! (extends arm)
The floorboards under Sam's feet begin to break. She quickly backs away.
Colette: (very upset) No, no, no... Don't go.
Dominic: (admonishing but understanding) Colette... She can't stay.
Sam: (processed; coughing) We can't stay here!
Dominic: It's too late. (trying to keep it together) Your mother already made up her mind.
Michonne: I wish you could... come with me.
Michonne: Girls, listen to me. I have to go. I... (trails off) I just have to go.
Michonne: Please understand, it's not that I want to leave... I don't. I want to stay with you.
Michonne says nothing.
Sam: (processed; desperate) Michonne! I'm not leaving you here!
Sam starts sprinting towards Michonne.
Michonne: (through tears) Goodbye. I'm... so sorry.
Sam grabs Michonne's arm and pulls her toward the window. Sam steps outside.
Sam: Give me your hand!
Michonne grabs Sam's hand.
Sam: I've got you!
Michonne: I'm staying right here.
Sam: Michonne! We have to go!
Michonne: (tearing up) I love you. So much.
Colette: I love you too.
Michonne: I'll come back for you. I promise.
Colette: Okay.
Michonne: Girls, please... just tell me it's okay.
Colette: It's okay, Mama.
Michonne says nothing.
Michonne hugs her daughters.
Sam: (coughing) We have to get you out!
Sam pulls Michonne toward the window despite her resistance.
Sam: Come on, Michonne! (coughing) Go!
Sam throws Michonne out the window.
Sam: It's okay.
The boards beneath Sam's feet break, and she falls into the fire.Michonne and determinantly Sam jump off the roof. Michonne passes out.
Beach
Sometime later, the group walks through the forest and reaches the beach. Michonne falls to her knees. Eventually, she gets up and they walk onto the beach. Sam determinantly walks up to her, then Pete.
Pete: (tired; distracted) Siddiq's gonna take a boat down to what's left of Monroe. Salvage what we can...
Pete: We can drop you off in Oceanside or maybe one of the other communities up north. Good people.
Sam: Thanks. And thank you... for everything. I don't know if we would've made it out of there without you. You found my brothers. You took care of Norma... We owe you a lot.
Michonne: You didn't need me, Sam. You would've figured it out on your own.
Sam will remember that.
Michonne: You're welcome.
Michonne: Promise me you'll learn from this. Remember what happened here.
Sam will remember that.
Sam: Sorry, I'll... I'll leave you alone.
Paige hugs Alex and James.
Pete: Give them time. They've lost a lot today. We made it out... But... they need time to grieve those that didn't. It's a lot to take in.
Michonne: Time isn't gonna fix this.
Michonne: Sam's death... it was my fault. She stayed behind, tried to get me to leave, but I--I wouldn't go.
Michonne: We've all lost too much.
Pete: For all of us...
Pete: (sad) It'll be harder out there...
Pete: I might lean on you a bit more.
Pete: It's not gonna be the same without him.
Pete: It's not gonna be the same without them.
Michonne: I've got you covered, Pete. Don't worry.
(If Oak is alive.)
Michonne: Yeah...I'm gonna miss him too.
(If Oak is dead.)
Michonne: I'm gonna miss them too...
Michonne: (worried) Are you gonna be okay, Pete?
Pete: I've... been meaning to ask you...
Pete: When we got separated...I heard you calling out for your daughters. What... what happened in there? (guilty) I tried to find you. But I couldn't... I had to get everyone out, and...I could just hear you... screaming.
Michonne: I wasn't thinking clearly... all the smoke... I saw things that couldn't be real.
Michonne: I almost didn't make it out. The place was burning to the ground and I... I couldn't find anyone. I was just... disoriented.
Michonne: I saw my daughters... I got to talk to them.
Pete: (worried) But that's... not possible. Right? For them to be there.
Michonne says nothing.
Pete: Maybe you'd better start thinking about, you know... what if this doesn't go away?
Michonne: Maybe it won't... but this time when I saw them...
Michonne: I was able to walk away. I couldn't keep living in that moment with them anymore.
Michonne: They... weren't angry. I held them and... they hugged me back. It felt real.
Pete: (serious) I think it's time to stop running. Go back to your group. The people you left... your family. Before you can't anymore. If I know anything... it's how goddamn impermanent things are these days. Before you know it, they'll be gone... You'll have lost your chance.
Michonne: You're right. It's time to go back.
(If Michonne said she's not staying forever or said nothing.)
Michonne: I've been thinking... maybe I'll stick around. If you'll have me.
Pete will remember that.
(If Michonne said that she liked being part of the crew.)
Michonne: I like being around you guys.
Pete will remember that.
(If Michonne asked if Pete wanted her gone.)
Michonne: You trying to get rid of me?
Michonne: I'll go back eventually. When I'm ready.
Pete will remember that.
Pete: Don't keep making the same mistake.
Pete: Come on.
Michonne sees her daughters in the forest. She reaches toward them, then walks away.
